MULTI-CLUB OWNERSHIP

Continental Soccer Empire Faces Debt Reckoning Amongst U.K Administration

John Textor, founder and chairman of Eagle Football Holdings, is at risk of losing his entire soccer empire.

Eagle Football Holdings, the entity that holds Textor’s stakes in his clubs, was usurped by U.K. administration due to “events of default under its financial agreements.”

A Shift in Power
While the clubs Textor has stake in—like Olympique Lyonnais in France and Botafogo in Brazil—are still operating like before, control of the parent company has shifted to Cork Gully. Now, possible suitors can place bids to buy Eagle Football Holdings or individual stakes of Textor’s positions. The goal is to secure the best possible outcome for creditors.

Growing Tensions
In his own defense, Textor believes the move is unfair—that his business is still financially strong. He also stated that the defaults were of “technical nature” and were caused by Ares Management. However, Ares has refuted Textor’s statements.

LEAGUE EXPANSION

An NBA Europe Basketball League is Sparking Major Excitement From Investors

For decades, the NBA has envisioned building its own European-centric league. And now this dream could finally become reality in the fall of 2027.

Last week, over 120 potential investors submitted non-binding bids to the NBA. The NBA received multiple offers over $500 million, including several at and above $1 billion. NBA commissioner Adam Silver hasn’t provided much detail on league structure, but hinted at 14 to 16 teams across 12 cities. The proposed league is also backed by FIBA, Europe’s basketball governing body.

NBA Europe Inevitable
NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum said, “The level of engagement and the scale of the bids reflect the marketplace’s belief in our proposed model and the enormous, untapped potential for European basketball.” The NBA is now in its bid-reviewing process and will gather a shortlist of investor candidates who “share [the NBA’s] vision and commitment to accelerating the growth of the game across the continent".

British Billionaire Jim Ratcliffe Continues to Struggle with the Sale of French Ligue 1 Club OGC Nice

Jim Ratcliffe, the British billionaire and CEO of INEOS, has been unable to find a successful buyer for OGC Nice, a French club competing in France’s top league. Ratcliffe vowed that he would turn the club into a “force,” but has performed in quite the opposite direction since acquiring the club in 2019.

Ratcliffe Wants Out
Ratcliffe, who is now a stakeholder in Manchester United, has had to slash his original asking price of €200 million, given the lack of emergence of a serious buyer. Ratcliffe has made clear to the public that he adamantly wants nothing to do with OGC Nice, any longer.

FIFA WORLD CUP

Supporter Groups File Lawsuits with FIFA Over “Excessive Ticket Prices” for Upcoming World Cup

European supporter groups, led by Football Supporters Europe and European consumers, have filed a complaint with the European Commission against FIFA over what they call “excessive” World Cup ticket pricing, increasing pressure on how major soccer bodies monetize global events.

Protection and Power of the Fans
The lawsuit argues that pricing practices may violate EU consumer protection laws and unfairly take advantage of fan demand. If regulators step in, it could reduce FIFA's pricing power and force more transparency across major events. Moreover, it would show that organized fan groups are becoming more influential in shaping the business side of worldwide sports.
